NHS Right to Choose for ADHD Services

It is true that many more people are investigating this as a possibility to explain their emotions and behaviour. This on the one hand is good, as it maybe underdiagnosed especially in some groups. We are however seeing an increase in demand for alternative services in behaviour diagnosis such as ADHD, and would request all patients familiarise themselves with the options around NHS Right to Choose before making their decision.

Many options exist for patients wanting to investigate or pursue a diagnosis of a conditions effecting behaviour, such as ADHD, an increasingly popular choice is using the NHS Right to choose service to refer to a Non-NHS Physological Service.

Referral to non-NHS ADHD services

There are a number of factors around referrals non-NHS services which as a practice we must consider, including the impact on both the surgery and the patients. This is particularly true around the drugs non-NHS services may prescribe.

"Everyone benefits from a stimulant drug, just like having a strong caffeine drink, they will improve concentration and attention, but this does not mean they are indicated or safe. They are controlled drugs. These providers have made it routine to diagnose all patients referred to them with ADHD and have never not made the diagnosis or issued medication, which is beginning to concern many doctors."

We have therefore moved to a position where we need to ensure that the patient is fully aware of the ramifications if they exercise their right to choose. This does not mean we will not refer to non-nhs companies but we have committed to ensure that the patient choice is fully informed. This is to protect us and you as our patient.

Please read the 'ADHD Service Options' and "Possible Symptoms of ADHD" and once you have read everything, if you still want the referral to be made please complete and return the forms to the practice.
